September 28-29, 2012
2-Day Schedule

Day 1: Friday, September 28

12:00pm – Soft start, setup, and informal introductions.
12:15pm – Introductions. Overview of the hackathon and data visualization for civic action.
1:00pm – Datasets & Viz Essentials for Everyone: a hands-on data visualization project from start to finish.
2:00pm – Lunch. Project ideation and sharing towards a formation of working groups. Each group will prepare, analyze, and visualize a dataset to address a research question.
3:00pm – Periodic check-ins and teach-ins on various tools and methods.
5:30pm – End of day check-in and peer review.
6:00pm – Reception (wine and snacks)

Day 2: Saturday, September 29

10:00am – 12:00pm – Data mining and visualization intensive tutorials (optional and based on expressed interest on Friday. Locations TBA).
12:00pm – Soft start and setup.
12:15pm – Recap of Day 1 and introductions for any new participants joining the hackathon.
1:00pm – Working lunch and break into working groups again to continue developing datasets / prototypes from Day 1 (or explore new questions/directions).
2:30pm – Discuss work-in-progress with larger group.
3:00pm – Periodic check-ins and teach-ins on various tools and methods.
5:30pm – Informal presentation of working outcomes with peer review. Wrap-up.
